Beginning February 26, 2018, testing for Trichomonas vaginalis using molecular technology on the BD Viper XTR will be available upon request at LifeLabs Medical Laboratories.
This test will offer a high sensitivity for the detection of Trichomonas vaginalis. Based on this change we will no longer provide microscopy results on vaginal swabs – Bacterial Vaginosis and Yeast will continue to be reported by microscopy.
If Trichomonas vaginalis infection is suspected then please indicate on the requisition and submit for molecular testing (click to see example).
Trichomonas vaginalis testing on BD Viper XTR is approved for female specimens only. Urines from male patients can be submitted and testing will be performed, however results should be interpreted with caution.
Acceptable specimen types include male and female urines, and female vaginal/endocervical molecular swabs (same ones currently used for CT/GC). Trichomonas vaginalis testing can be tested concurrently with testing for CT/GC on the same sample.
Acceptable collection containers:
- Vaginal or Endocervical: BD ProbeTec CT/GC Qx Amplified DNA Assay collection kit (pink)
- Female or Male Urine: 90mL sterile container
