Empowering Healthier Canadians: How Caring Transforms the Patient Experience

At LifeLabs, we are proud Canadians, serving Canadians from coast to coast. In the “Empowering Healthier Canadians” story series, we’re showcasing inspiring stories from the communities we support and how we’re continuing our legacy of advancing patient care through our values of caring, agility, teamwork, and a customer-centred approach.

Today, we’re sharing a story from the Davis Drive Patient Service Centre about how leading with skill, care, compassion, and kindness can make all the difference in a patient’s health journey.

Transforming Anxiety into Trust

I recently had my blood drawn, and I cannot speak highly enough of the phlebotomist, Marjan, who performed the procedure. As someone with a significant fear of needles, I was incredibly anxious going into the appointment, but her professionalism, compassion, and skill turned what could have been a stressful experience into one that was comfortable and reassuring.

From the moment I sat down, Marjan immediately put me at ease with her warm and approachable demeanour. She took the time to listen to my concerns about needles, acknowledging my fear without judgment, which made me feel understood and respected. She explained each step of the process clearly and calmly, ensuring I knew exactly what to expect. This transparency was incredibly helpful in reducing my anxiety.

What stood out most was her remarkable skill and gentle touch. She was meticulous in preparing the site, and her technique was so precise that I barely felt the needle. She maintained a steady, soothing conversation throughout, distracting me from the procedure and keeping my nerves at bay. Her confidence and expertise were evident, yet she remained humble and focused on my comfort.  Beyond her technical ability, Marjan demonstrated genuine empathy. She checked in with me during the process to ensure I was okay and even offered a few lighthearted comments that made me smile, easing the tension.

After the blood draw, she took the time to make sure I felt fine before letting me leave, providing me with clear aftercare instructions and a reassuring smile. I left the appointment feeling deeply grateful for Marjan’s care. Her ability to combine technical expertise with kindness and patience made all the difference for someone like me who dreads needles. I would highly recommend her to anyone, especially those with similar anxieties. Thank you, Marjan, for making such a positive impact!
