Dr. Sukhbir Kaur, BMedSci, MSc, PhD, FRCPath, EuSpLM, FCACB, NRCC, has been a clinical biochemist and laboratory director of the Cam Coady Building at LifeLabs since 2024. At LifeLabs, she is clinically responsible for colorectal cancer screening, autoimmunity, urinalysis, high-volume chemistry, and immunoassay testing.
Dr. Kaur earned a bachelor’s in medical science in 2007 and completed a PhD in molecular and cell biology in 2011 from the University of Birmingham. Dr. Kaur then undertook a three-year training program in clinical biochemistry within the National Health Service (NHS) in England and qualified as a registered Clinical Scientist in 2014. During her training, she also earned an MSc degree with distinction in clinical biochemistry from the University of Manchester, UK. In 2018, Dr. Kaur completed her fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath), and in 2020, she completed her fellowship examination for the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FCACB).
Before joining LifeLabs, Dr. Kaur was appointed a Senior Clinical Scientist at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in 2014. She was then promoted to Principal Clinical Scientist at Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust in 2016, where she primarily led the mass spectrometry specialist testing service.
In 2019, Dr. Kaur joined Fraser Health Authority as a Clinical Biochemist, overseeing point-of-care testing, mass spectrometry, and core clinical biochemistry services. In 2022, Dr. Kaur was appointed as clinical lead for point-of-care testing for the former Saskatoon Health Region in Saskatchewan, and she also supported rural clinical biochemistry services and provincial initiatives at the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
In addition to her role at LifeLabs, Dr. Kaur is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia, a registered European Specialist in Laboratory Medicine (EuSpLM), and a registrant of the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC).
An active contributor to the medical and scientific community, Dr. Kaur is an expert panel member for point-of-care testing at Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), Country Advisor for Canada at Royal College of Pathologists, and a corresponding member of the committee for kidney disease at the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC).
She also actively participates in various special interest groups of the Canadian Society of Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Kaur’s subspecialty interests include kidney disease, point-of-care testing, mass spectrometry, endocrinology, rural and primary care laboratory medicine.
Dr. Kaur brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her role. Her innovative approach and commitment to quality ensure LifeLabs remains at the forefront of advancing patient care.
