High Sensitivity Troponin T

FAQs

Troponin is a protein in your heart muscle that helps it contract. When your heart doesn’t get enough blood flow (a condition called ischemia), heart muscle cells can die, and troponin can be released into your bloodstream. Due to this reason, the doctors use a blood test to check for “troponin T,” which can indicate a heart attack. Most recently, this test has also proven useful in identifying the risk of future heart problems in healthy people with no symptoms.

The High Sensitivity Troponin T test is a blood test that measures the levels of Troponin T in your blood. These levels are linked to your heart health- higher levels mean a higher risk of future heart problems. This test helps healthcare providers classify patients as low, intermediate, or high-risk, and guide early management of blood pressure, cholesterol, and further evaluations to reduce the risk.

The High Sensitivity Troponin T Test can help identify people who may be at risk of heart disease, even if they don’t have any symptoms. Some risk factors include:

  • Family history of CVD, diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol OR
  • Ethnic backgrounds with increased CVD risk (South Asian, Chinese, Black) OR
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions (e.g. Amyloidosis, long COVID-19 syndrome)
  • Patients on cardiotoxic medications (e.g. chemotherapy, immunotherapy)

Testing is completed by LifeLabs at a Patient Service Center or via our mobile lab service through a simple blood sample. You will require a completed test requisition from your healthcare provider.

FAQs

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of mortality, and many at-risk individuals go undetected by traditional risk assessment tools. High Sensitivity Troponin T (hs-TnT) is a proven biomarker that has been shown to enhance cardiovascular risk stratification in asymptomatic patients, providing valuable insights that may support earlier interventions and better patient outcomes.

Key Benefits of High Sensitivity Troponin T Test:

  • Enhanced Risk Stratification – Identifies low, intermediate, and high-risk patients beyond conventional tools like the Framingham Risk Score (FRS).
  • Proactive Intervention – Can complement clinical assessments by guiding early management of blood pressure, lipid levels, and further cardiovascular evaluation.
  • Clinically Validated – Supported by peer-reviewed studies 1-3 linking hs-TnT levels to increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk.
  • Accessible – Available at all LifeLabs Patient Service Centres in Ontario.

High Sensitivity Tropoinin T Test may benefit patients with low-intermediate FRS (5-10%) who also have additional cardiovascular risk factors, such as:

  • Family history of CVD, diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol OR
  • Ethnic backgrounds with increased CVD risk (South Asian, Chinese, Black) OR
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions (e.g. Amyloidosis, long COVID-19 syndrome)
  • Patients on cardiotoxic medications (e.g. chemotherapy, immunotherapy)

1. Write “Hs Troponin T (Non-Acute)” in the “Other Tests” section of a standard MOH requisition.

Direct patients to any LifeLabs Patient Service Centre for sample collection and payment.

The High sensitivity Troponin T test for cardiovascular risk stratification in asymptomatic patients is currently an uninsured test. The cost is: $35

Payment may be made by the patient when the blood sample is collected at one of our Patient Service Centres. For convenience, Visa, Mastercard and Debit Cards are excepted.

Patient are encouraged to check with their private healthcare provider to see if coverage is provided.

Results will be available within 10 days of the sample reaching the laboratory for testing.

Cut-off Values for Categorizing Risk in Asymptomatic Patients

The Hs Troponin T test should be used alongside clinical presentation and cardiovascular findings to categorize patients and determine the appropriate intervention.
