Dr. Kelly had been in the role of Medical Director and Medical Lead at LifeLabs from 1998 – August 2020. He had been responsible for all medical operations across B.C., overseeing eight laboratories, 120 patient service centres and mobile lab services to provide diagnostic testing for 25,000 patients a day. With a commitment to ensuring the highest medical quality of patient and physician services, he works in partnership with the medical/scientific staff and Quality and Regulatory Affairs to assist primary care providers and specialists in the diagnosis and management of their patients. Dr. Kelly’s clinical interests lie in general laboratory medicine with emphasis on the diagnosis, treatment and control of infectious diseases and a special interest in enteric infections and molecular diagnostics.
Dr. Kelly received his medical degree and PhD in microbiology from Indiana University and completed post-graduate training at University of Minnesota Medical School and US National Institutes of Health. He worked for several years in Salt Lake City VA Hospital as Acting Chief, Laboratory Services, and the University of Texas Medical Branch as Professor of Pathology. Dr. Kelly moved to Vancouver, B.C. in 1984 to become Professor of Pathology at the University of British Columbia and microbiologist at Vancouver General Hospital. In 1987, he joined MDS Metro (now LifeLabs) as Head of Microbiology; the BC Provincial Lab as medical head of the enteric section; and Shaughnessy Hospital as Division Head of Microbiology and Infection Control. Dr. Kelly has served as the President and owner of Ocean Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Seatek Marine Biotechnology, Inc.
Dr. Kelly is a member of the Regional Leadership Committee and Quality Committee at the BC Lab Agency and PDR Committee, BC College of Naturopathic Physicians. Dr. Kelly’s research interests have led to more than 170 published articles and abstracts and has five patents and trademarks.
