The rise of antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" has been a concern of public health officials for years and over-use of antibiotics or prescribing the wrong antibiotics to treat an illness has greatly contributed to this problem. To help combat this issue, LifeLabs began publishing antibiograms: a collection of data that helps health care providers select the most effective treatment options for illnesses requiring antibiotics.
These reports provide physicians and health care providers with critical information that shows the responsiveness of bacteria or organisms to different antibiotics in different physical geographies. LifeLabs has been publishing antibiograms in British Columbia since 2005, and is pleased to announce that antibiogram results are now available for Ontario Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) regions for the first time.
Based on information collected between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2016, LifeLabs has developed two reports are for each LHIN in Ontario. The data is divided by patient samples from the community and patient samples from long-term care facilities that we service in each L HIN (excluding hospitals).
These antibiograms not only provide our clients with extremely valuable information that support physicians in determining the most suitable therapy for their communities, they are also an invaluable tool for monitoring antibiotic resistance in Ontario.
