LifeLabs Locates Provincial Testing Centre in Niagara Region
Fecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT) Centre Created to Support Ontario’s ColonCancerCheck Program
Thorold, ON (July 31, 2008) -- LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services today announced that it has chosen to locate its Provincial Centre for Fecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT) at its Niagara Regional Lab at 3460 Schmon Pkwy., in Thorold, Ontario. FOBT testing is used to identify colorectal-related illnesses, including colon cancer.
“While we have been operating a full service testing lab and several patient service centres in the Niagara region for many years, we have recently moved all of our provincial FOBT testing to our Schmon Pkwy. lab as a result of our involvement in Ontario’s ColonCancerCheck program,” said Frank Amodeo, Acting CEO, LifeLabs.
LifeLabs is a major supporter of ColonCancerCheck through the provision of FOBT collection kits to physicians and pharmacists, the testing of FOBT kits and the delivery of test results.
Launched by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, in collaboration with Cancer Care Ontario, ColonCancerCheck is a provincial screening program designed to detect colorectal cancer at an early asymptomatic stage, thereby reducing the rate of mortality. One of the ways the program supports this goal is by providing funding to screen all average risk men and women 50 years and older using FOBT. When caught early through regular screening, colorectal cancer is 90% curable.
“LifeLabs is proud to support this valuable program, designed to improve the survival rate of patients with colon cancer, by identifying it at an early stage,” added Amodeo. “And we are pleased to consolidate all related FOBT testing work in this part of the province, where it will be supported by our professionally-trained staff and a state-of-the-art testing facility.”
LifeLabs has been serving the healthcare needs of Canadians for nearly 50 years and has been operating in the Niagara area for approximately 35 years. In the Niagara region, LifeLabs employs close to 200 people, provides regular support to roughly 600 physicians and serves 470,000 patients annually.
